This thread is for discussion of the Burning Wheel game that I'll be running this semester. I'll likely to continue to edit this first post so that it has information about the characters, etc, for easy reference. GM: Mike Players: Chris, Danny, Joel, Peter Resources: www.burningwheel.orgwww.burningwheel.org/wiki/index.php?title=DownloadsThe above link will lead you to a BW Wiki Downloads page, which has some sample chapters from the book. I recommend taking a look at "It Revolves on This" to get started. Maybe the Orc lifepaths to get an idea of what they look like. Buy the BW Revised books here if you want: key20.com/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=10

Okay guys, here's what we've decided on so far:
Logistically, we're probably going to play on Sundays for about 4 hours. Afternoon, probably. 12-4? 1-5 and then dinner for those who want it? Something like that. We'll probably play on campus somewhere.
As for the game itself, here's the situation: A duke or lord of some kind has been defeated / overthrown by another noble. Your characters will somehow be involved! We were thinking we'd stick with Men, and we'll have to decide whether Elves and Dwarves and Orcs exist in this setting or not. To further limit things (because there are a lot of options for human characters), we'll probably stick with the Noble, Noble-court, and Professional Soldier lifepath settings. Maybe the Outlaw and Religious settings as well. You'll find out more about what this all means soon. Basically it means no one is going to be playing a villager or street urchin- we want characters who will be directly involved with the situation!
Remember, Burning Wheel has no setting of its own, so we'll be making the setting. Right now all we know is that it's a medieval fantasy world with Men in it. Do we want magic? Elves, etc? Monsters? Let me know your thoughts about this. I'm personally leaning towards going all out with the fantasy stuff, but keeping the other races very different and separate from Men. Unlike in D&D where everyone more or less gets along, we'll have more complex relationships between all the races.
As far as characters go, think in terms of nobles and the people who would be involved with them and their families. One of you could even play the noble who was deposed. One could play the Knight Captain, one could play a priest, or the noble's wife/husband/son/daughter/uncle/bastard son/whatever, or really anyone, as long as you're involved in the situation at hand.
The main way to involve your character with the situation is to have strong, proactive Beliefs. Beliefs are an aspect of your character in the game. You get three of them. They are what drive the game forward and help your character grow.
The deposed noble would likely have a belief related to regaining his lands and title, for example.
Anyway, hopefully that's enough for you guys to get started kicking around some ideas. I'll post some links to various BW resources in the introductory post. Let me know if you have any questions and definitely start posting your suggestions!

I hope this will involve violence. If you're talking about the game, then yes, it will. Burning Wheel has a pretty brutal combat system, compared with things like D&D. The game will include what you guys want, really. If you want to side with the deposed noble and help to reclaim his lands through force, then by all means, go kick some ass and take some names!

Well...
I'm alright with magic and elves (vile, perverted xenos that they are) and dwarves (valiant servants of the God-Emperor) and even orks (WAAAAGHHHH)
Gee, can you tell which setting I'm used to?

Hey guys,
I intend to make a post soon with each character's beliefs and instincts, as well as possibly some details about the game world. I am very busy this week though, so it may not be today or tomorrow. Soon, though! Chris, we'll have to hammer out the details of your character before we play. I think we agreed that playing at Gamers was the plan, yes?
