As I said I'll be posting things that I know/hear about around campus here for your benefit. I don't know the details yet but next week is Islamo-Fascism Week and the Muslim Student Association is doing and Islam Awareness Week as a counter to it. Next week is also National Coming Out Week that Queers & Allies, GLBTA, Women's Initiative, AU Players, Mission Improv-able and the United Methodist Student Association are holding. The events I know about are: Oct 22 - 8pm Hughes Formal Lounge, The Coming Out Monologues Oct 23 - 8:15pm in MGC 247, Bisexual/Fluid/Pansexual Discussion Oct 24 - 8:15pm in MGC 203, S&M 101 Oct 25 - 8:15pm in MGC 200, Trans 101 10pm in Kay Spiritual Center, Spiritual Healing Session Oct 27 - 11am in MGC 203, PFLAG Meeting for Parents, Students and Friends The College Republicans are still doing Ron Paul on Oct 23 at 8pm, you will need to reserve tickets on their website at www.aurepublicans.com/site/?q=node/637 .

Batelle Atrium All welcome Dr. Bulent Aliriza joined CSIS in 1994 when he established the Turkey Project. As Director of the project, he focuses on Turkey 's foreign policy, domestic politics, and economy. He is also Co-Director of the CSIS Caspian Sea Energy Project, also established in 1994, which focuses on the transportation of oil and gas from the Caspian region to world markets. Prior to joining CSIS, he was a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Earlier, he served as a diplomat in New York and Washington . Dr. Aliriza has a B.Sc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science and obtained his doctorate from the University of Oxford . Lynn Fredriksson, Africa Advocacy Director for Amnesty International will deliver a brownbag talk at 12:30 pm on October 25 entitled, ³Statelessness and Self-Determination in Somaliland.² Ms Fredriksson is a Ph.D. Candidate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison who travels to Africa on a regular basis. Daniel Smith, ³The Nigerian Factor: Corruption and Its Discontents² Daniel Jordan Smith is Associate professor of Anthropology at Brown University. He has worked in Nigeria since the late 1980s, first as a public health advisor with a nongovernmental organization and later as an anthropologist. He has published widely on Nigeria in journals such as Africa, American Anthropologist, American Ethnologist, Canadian Journal of African Studies, Cultural Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, Population and Development Review, and World Development. His recent book, A Culture of Corruption: Everyday Deception and Popular Discontent in Nigeria, is published by Princeton University Press (2007). Bentley Lounge, Gray Hall.
November 8 (8:10 PM 10:30 PM, Clark 11)
Jimmy Kandeh is Associate Professor in Political Science at the University of Richmond. He is the Author of numerous articles on Western African politics and is a recipient of U.S. Institute of Peace Grant. His areas of specialty are comparative politics and African politics. In 2004, he published ³Coups from Below: Armed Subalterns and State Power in West Africa² (Palgrave Macmillan). He will be reflecting on the causes of the civil war in Sierra Leone.

Dana Graber Ladek, International Organization for Migration Dana is an international development professional with more than ten years of experience developing and implementing humanitarian assistance and community stabilization projects around the world. As IOM’s Iraq Displacement Specialist, she recently has been interviewed by the BBC, NPR, NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, NBC Nightly News, ABC World News Tonight, Reuters, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among others. Dana has worked in Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan, Cambodia, Colombia, Honduras, Japan, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Guatemala.

Elizabeth Ferris, Brookings Institute Scholar Dr. Elizabeth G. Ferris is Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC and Co-Director of the Brookings-Bern Project on Internal Displacement. Her current research interests focus on the politics of humanitarian action and on the role of civil society in protecting displaced populations.
Sarnata Reynolds, Refugee Program Director, Amnesty International Sarnata Reynolds is the Refugee Program Director of Amnesty International USA where she promotes the enforcement of international human rights standards pertaining to refugees and asylum seekers. In September, she participated in a 10 day mission to Jordan documenting the situation of Iraqi refugees. She provides testimony before Congress regularly and recently discussed the situation of Iraqi refugees.
Joan Timoney, Director of External Relations, Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children Prior to joining the Women’s Commission, Joan served as the Vice President for Programs at the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit organization that seeks to inspire a new generation to serve in the federal government. She is a graduate of George Washington University and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

I wasn't even aware the Carter thing was a big issue. I mean, the guy probably requested it that way, to not have that many people--and if the guest wants it, he/she gets/should get it. Better for the person to come somewhat than not to come at all. Besides, a lot of us have seen him already, and while he's alright, he's not that good. To people who haven't seen him, they're not missing that much. It's not like it's Stephen Colbert or anything...

Here are some events to kick off the month of November!
On the 7th the College Democrats are brining Terry McAuliffe in Ward 2 for 8-9pm. He is in charge of the Hillary Supporters and was the DNC leader from 2001-2005.
On the 8th Valerie Plame is actually coming. It will be from 8:15-9:15 in Ward 1. Valerie Plame is the Plame in the Plame Scandal, I wonder if there will be any spies trying to kill her...

I just saw this. I'm a bit upset that SA hasn't really advertised this as I put money down on it. But come on, who wouldn't put money down on a chocolate fountain?
